The division of the collections according to LeathermanĪpart from famous collections such as the Wave, Charge, Juice and Surge, Leatherman also classifies the tools by size. So he just decided to develop the tool with his brother in law and establish a company around it: Leatherman. A salient detail is that Leatherman offered his idea to practically all knife and tool companies. The engineer in him started thinking about a design and not long after he introduced the first prototype of the multi-tool we know today. Every single time, however, he was confronted with the same thing: the pocket knife didn't have pliers. On the road he used a pocket knife to fix his car and anything that needed fixing in the hotel rooms they stayed at. The history of LeathermanĪt the end of the seventies and the start of the eighties Tim Leatherman and his wife were travelling through Europe in an old Fiat. But how do you choose the Leatherman that will suit you best? We would love to tell you more about all the differences. There is an appropriate multi-tool for everyone. Not that surprising considering the fact that Leatherman produces so many different multi-tools in different classes. Today this name is almost the same as the generic name for this type of tool. And I do want my bit kits in the pouch.Leatherman multi-tools are famous worldwide. I prefer a vertical orientation although the standard velcro pouch is much more noisy when you open it. The premium pouch has no room for bit kits and sits horisontally as opposite to the standard pouch. But make sure you don't lose the Surge (lanyard! ! ) or break your only blade in the field :-)And get the standard pouch. Get the bit extender, the bit kit and the lanyard as well, and you never need to buy a multi-tool again. But if you don't mind the weight and prefer only one knife/tool, this could be it. On hikes, I prefer a Mora knife, an axe or saw, and a smaller multitool (for example the Leatherman Wave or something smaller). It's simply too heavy to carry all day or during hikes. Back in Sweden, it gathers dust in the toolbox. I also go on foreign missions where it comes in handy - you never know what kind of gear that is available, or what you will need to fix. It has a good set of tools and fits nicely in the hand. I bought it because it's big and sturdy, and has huge pliers. A friend swears by it, and he used it in a UN camp after the Haiti earthquake. With the outward opening blades on the handles access is quick allowing the job to get done. The surge can handle both small and large double ended bits ensuring even greater versatility. It has an excellent selection of tough steel blades and a really tough pair of pliers. The Leatherman Surge is a work horse of the Leatherman range of tools, better suited to a tool box rather than a travellers pack.
